Shelby's Kindergarten Graduation!

Thursday, May 27, 2010. It's hard to believe Shelby's first year of school is over! I think she had a blast in kindergarten and only complained of going to school a few mornings the entire year. Mrs. Ghrist was a great teacher who helped her love school and learning new things. Her class was blessed with 2 great teachers as Mrs. Lowe stepped in as the substitute when Mrs. Ghrist had her baby girl the third week of school. It was fun to see the reaction of the entire class the last week of school when Mrs. Lowe returned to sub for another K class. She came out to the class line and greeted each student by name. They all jumped up and down and squealed and gave her lots of hugs. Shelby went to school knowing one other girl in her class and came out having made lots of new friends - girls and boys, kindergartners and older. Almost every day when I picked her up from school she had something to say that either started with, "There's this boy" or "There are these 3 boys". I think she spent a lot of time chasing them around the playground. She can be very competitive and boys seem to be the challenge she is looking for. She liked math (for whatever reason) and she did a great job drawing things in art. She is a very neat printer and is interested in writing cursive. Most of all, Shelby really did a great job learning to read in K. Prior to that she pretty much memorized books and could read them based on the pictures. The reading level goal for the end of K is level D. At the time of her spring progress report she was reading at level E so she had passed that goal. At the end of the year on her report card Mrs. Ghrist noted she was reading at level G. She had told me that the goal for the end of first grade is level I so Shelby is well on her way!
On the last day of school the students went for 1 hour. Mrs. Ghrist had prepared a small program in the room before presenting each student with a certificate of completion. She played graduation music and each time she presented a graduate the rest of the students responded with "Yesssss". After the program they had a little bit of time for one last chance of playground fun.
Here are a few pics from the big day. Of course my camera would not work so these are all with my cell phone so not real clear or close......

Here are pictures of Shelby on the first day and last day of school. Not sure how much change can be noticed, but one thing was consistent throughout the year. I could probably count on both hands the number of days she did not wear some type of headband in her hair!

I hope each year she continues to love school and each teacher she is placed with. 2009-2010 Kindergarten at Oakdale Elementary has given her a great start!
