Grizzly Jack's Grand Bear Resort

Again this year, Heartland closed their doors for the week between Christmas and New Years. I see this becoming an opportunity for a family vacation. It really isn't the best time of the year with all the other traveling we do for the holidays, but it is the only week of the year we can get daddy away from work! I had heard about this indoor water park and amusement park only 1 hour away from home. I decided this might be fun. Let me just start off by saying the girls did have fun. I mean, when isn't spending time at a hotel fun for kids? Throw in a little water & carnival rides and their set. And daddy was there too. Even better. However, I must also say that we sort of did things a little backwards. Considering last year for Christmas my entire family spent the holiday at the Kalahari indoor water park at Wisconsin Dells. And then this summer I took the girls for their first trip to Six Flags with Nate's family. Sooooo, this place seemed a little lame on account of that. But as I said, it was good for the 4 of us to get away together, and the place did have good pizza! :)
So on Wednesday, December 29th, we loaded up and headed north (again) to Utica. We found this little spot of fun in the middle of corn fields! We got settled in to our cabin like hotel and prepared to hit the water park. Besides being small, it was freeeeezing in there! The water was chilly and the room itself was just cold. I heard the next morning at check out that they were having a problem with the heater. I have quite a few pictures but they aren't the best. I'm still trying to figure out some of the features of my new camera and action shots are a little blurry.

Morgan & daddy sliddin' fast!

they came flying out of this slide too
I had a hard time getting a pic in time!

After the water park, we headed back to the room to get cleaned up for supper. We ate at the restaurant located in the amusement park building across the parking lot. After eating, we looked around at the rides that we were going to try the next day. The girls took a ride on the carousel and then we returned to our room for the night. At 9:45 Nate and Morgan headed to see what time the ice cream stand closed. Since it was 10, we quickly got down there for a late evening snack. And then finally got them to bed! Who doesn't eat ice cream at 10 and let their kids stay up until 11:30? That's just what you do on vacation, right??
On Thursday morning we got ready and checked out of our room. After loading the car we drove over to the amusement park where we spent the next 5 hours or so. They did have several fun rides. They even had the best carnival ride ever- the Tilt A Whirl! I rode that with the girls but let me tell ya, I was 3 and out! I didn't have much for breakfast and all that spinning gave me a headache. So, once I ate that pizza for lunch, there were no more rides for me.

this lovely creature greets you at the door

this ride the girls rode a lot
it quickly rises up that pole and then drops down
up, down, up, down
let's do it again!

Morgan & daddy on the speedy car ride
this thing went forward & backwards and the little car swung side to side

the dragon roller coaster
it was a pretty fast ride for kids

Shelby forcing a smile on a ride she thought was lame compared to her favorite

this was Shelby's favorite ride
it was impossible to get a picture of her on it
she had to ride with an adult. I rode once but lost
count the number of times Nate went on it.
oh there were tears after the "final ride"

We played some of those games that rob you of your quarters but I did win 2 stuffed animals with one of those claw machines. They won tickets in various games that purchased some of that plastic junk like at Chuckie Cheese. We drug them out of there and hit the road for home. Just miles down the road they were zonked. Home to prepare for the New Year and our next road trip. A post from that coming soon.
This pretty much wraps up 2010. I do have some posts to catch up on from summer. I hope to keep up a little better in 2011. Is that a resolution??

Some Snow Fun!

On our Christmas trip to Wisconsin we did a lot of sleigh riding. Like any other physical activity, it sure lets you know how old and out of shape you are! One quick run down the hill and then the slow walk back up. At least by the end of the second day we had beat a path down in the snow so it wasn't so difficult going back up carrying an inner tube. I have several pictures so I am not going to do a lot of typing but let the pics speak for themselves. Enjoy!

Shelby truly does not care to do all that hill climbing so she only went out for awhile the first day. We grabbed a group picture or two for grandma before she headed in.

Papa didn't even go into the house when he got home from work. He headed straight for the fun!

The girls got daddy new snow boots for Christmas. So he had no excuse this year to not go out. I think he actually had some fun once he got all his cold weather gear on!

Snowy Christmas in Wisconsin

On Christmas Eve morning, we headed north to my parents' house. The weather forecast did not look promising. Our snow did not start at midnight as predicted, instead just as we finished loading the car. It snowed the whole way. On Thursday afternoon I had started to pack the van. We decided Friday morning to take Nate's Trail Blazer for the 4 wheel drive. I knew it would be a tight squeeze but considering we both had SUV's before the van, this is how we had always traveled with 2 kids and all that stuff! We fit and headed out. We made it without any trouble. Just a slow drive. We did see a few problems for some. The worst being the upside down SUV on the west side of Rockford. Not sure how that happened! As soon as we got there and unloaded the car, we headed outside to sleigh ride. Pictures of that to come in another post. Stay tuned! That evening we had a nice meal of steak & shrimp and my grandma Johnson joined us. Christmas morning finally arrived and we did some more eating. This time my grandpa Mosley joined us. He had the best seat at the table. :)After cleanup, it was finally time to open the gifts. This year like the adults, we had the kids draw names. This helped eliminate an overload of gifts & extra expense that comes with a bigger family.

While outside my brother Jamie spotted the USA's national emblem the great bald eagle sitting in a tree. We enjoyed watching him throughout the weekend. That is one of the nice things about being in the peaceful country.
Some more sleigh riding and fun fellowship and yummy food at my uncle Tom & aunt Kathy's house wrapped up our Christmas celebrating for 2010!

Our Family Christmas

I will start this post with an early gift opening. The girls opened their big gift the week before Christmas since they would receive more gifts at the Metzger Christmas to go with it.
Posing with their piles
The Nintendo DSi's they had been waiting for!
Now on to our family Christmas in Normal.......
Since we would be out of town on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day, we had our family gift opening on Thursday evening. This is one reason we do not do a lot of Santa promoting in our house. Since we are never home on Christmas morning, I tell them I contacted the big guy to let him know we would be opening our gifts early so he needed to come to our house early. It gets rather confusing for everyone. Shelby wanted to leave her list by the fireplace for Santa when we left for WI. She thought Santa would still be coming on Christmas Eve and those gifts would be waiting when we got home on Sunday. No such luck! Santa brought his gifts and there would not be more!! Not to mention the man needs your list BEFORE he gets to your house! So, after delivering our Christmas treats to our neighbors, a trip to Target for a return, picking up a pizza for supper, watching an amazing light display set to music on the radio (local friends - if you didn't find this treasure this year, you must next), getting home to eat the pizza, sending the girls upstairs so I could stuff the stockings & get Santa's gifts out of the basement and under the tree, finally we were ready......

Veggie Tales DVD
Morgan also got Toy Story 3
which she doesn't like because it makes her cry
Beauty & The Beast
Shelby also got Despicable Me
Working on opening......
Stacking Cups she wanted after doing them at school in PE

A stack of books from Scholastic
She was most excited for the Christmas from the Black Lagoon book
Morgan with her spread of books
Baby Alive Baby All Gone
Learning Laptop
On her list to Santa was a sweater with a scarf
Once she opened the baby doll from Santa,
she wasn't interested in opening anything else
Modeling her bath robe
more modeling
Morgan & her Crayon Maker
She was sure that was what was in that wrapped present under the tree!
Stocking Stuffers
Eye Glasses for the American Girl Doll
Emily & her new glasses
Ruthie gets new glasses too!
I think they were happy with their new treasures. I had to remind them if they didn't get everything on their lists, we still had 1 Christmas left as well as we DON'T GET EVERYTHING on the list! Merry Christmas!
