School Update

I think Shelby has pretty much settled into school. Her teacher had her baby last weekend so Mrs. Lowe the sub is now in charge for the next several weeks.

Shelby still receives many morning greetings and hugs on her way to her class line. All of these coming from older girls & a boy. I told her she was not to hug the boy any more. If she wanted to shake his hand and tell him have a good day that was fine, but no more hugs. I'm not sure how old he is, I just know he is not in K. He also has his ears pierced which is a little much for me for a kid that age. He gives her a little too much attention for my liking. And each day after school there are lots of hugs and goodbyes with K's as well as older girls. Popular girl she is.

I received the first call from the school office on Thursday. She wasn't in trouble or sick. She had done hot lunch that day and they had a frozen juice bar. Somehow she had a problem with that and ended up with it all over her shirt, legs and socks. I guess she did a great job staying calm and giving the office secretary all the information she needed about her mom and dad. I took her a change of clothes and she was good to go. It didn't bother her at all for me to come 1/2 way into the day and not take her with me when I left. She was just disappointed to miss her recess while she waited.

Shelby had voiced her concern several times about the hot lunch line or buying milk on the days that she brings cold lunch. On Friday I asked her classroom TA what it was like in the lunchroom. She did say it could be intimidating, especially for a K'er. I told her Shelby did not like getting lunch there or buying the milk and wanted to start bringing milk from home. The TA told me how one day she was helping her in lunch and went with her to get the milk. She said Shelby knew better how to buy the milk with her lunch card then she did, so she was confident she could handle it. On the way to the van after school Friday, Shelby say, "Got the lunch thing down today". So I guess no more worries there.

During that conversation about lunch with the TA, she told me how Shelby had said a couple of funny things in the classroom the other day and she needed to get her book out to write them down. I told her I was sure there would be more to come.

She talks at home a lot about a boy from her class named Carter. I finally figured out who he was the other day and he looks to be the shyest kid in the class. I think he started the year out as a 1/2 day K student. I think it is interesting she would pick a boy she can dominate. Poor guy! Yesterday after seeing a commercial for a doll house on TV, I heard her saying she was going to tell Carter to buy that for her. I put an end to that idea real quick!

And finally, Friday evening I asked her what her favorite class was so far. She said recess. I told her recess wasn't technically a class so I asked her again. Then she said, PE. Go figure.
