Meet Glumpwart #3!

Shelby's favorite summer activity was Theater. The Parks N Rec office offered a class for 2nd thru 7th graders. They performed an interesting but entertaining version of Rapunzel on the last day of class. The class taught several aspects of theater besides their lines for the final performance. She is a natural when it comes to drama, so this was a good way for her to channel it. The only problem is, you really have to evaluate some situations to figure out if she is playing drama or if she really is hurt or sick or sad, etc. Morgan is catching on and will tell her, "Stop it. This isn't drama class"!

Going back to the beginning of class, they were given 4 parts and they had to choose 1 for auditions. She picked Rapunzel of course. She memorized a fairly large paragraph in 2 days. Needless to say Shelby was none to happy when I picked her up that day and she was given the part of Glumpwart #3. She cried the entire way home and was as mad as could be. She didn't want to hear about the big parts going to the older kids or those who have put in some years. She was more than confident that she could handle the big role. She was mostly disappointed in the fact that she didn't have a lot of lines to say. Well, she eventually got over her disappointment. On her own she wrote her teachers a note thanking them for her role.

Who exactly is Glumpwart #3? The Glumpwarts in this Rapunzel story are friends and helpers to the witch. There are 4 of them. Shelby had the lines for #3. In this particular story, the witch wants Rapunzels hair. Not because she is evil or just mean like everyone in the story thinks. It's because the witch and the Glumpwarts are BALD!

Friday, July 29th was the big day for the performance. We woke up to thunder, lightening & rain. They practiced all summer at the outdoor amplitheater and that is where they were going to perform Rapunzel. Luckily, the lady in charge checked the forecast and reserved the auditorium at Heartland CC. Here are some pictures of Shelby's first performance.

She had her lines down as well as lines of other characters. A few weeks ago while walking through Target, she started reciting that long part of Rapunzel's she memorized for auditions. I just figured she forgot about that long ago.

Following the performance, we walked across campus to the Cafe and had some cake and lemonade. As we are walking, Shelby asked me if on Monday they started a new performance. I told her no and that today was the last day. She was not happy about that! After cake we went to Moe's for lunch and when I parked the van I looked back and saw that she was crying. I thought maybe she was not happy about eating there but when I asked her what was wrong, she was sad that theater was over!

Papa Russell & Nonny Martha, Nonny Mary & Aunt Ashley joined us for the performance. My parents could not make it due to having to work and the time of the performance. So they had a bouquet of flowers delivered the night before.
Congrats on a great first performance Glumpwart Shelby! Stick with it and one day I can easily see you having that lead role!
